River Steward of the Year

2017 River Steward of the Year

Stan Petrowski, South Umpqua River

In recognition of his tireless effort to protect clean water and wild fish, the Native Fish Society is proud to give the 2017 River Steward of the Year Award to Stan Petrowski. Since 2012, Stan has lead the charge to protect salmon and their habitats from suction dredge mining. For years these miners were tearing apart the very same stretches of river where Stan had worked with his community to invest millions of dollars in salmon habitat. In 2016, with Stan’s help we secured protections for 24,000 miles of Essential Salmon Habitat, areas that are now off limits to suction dredge mining through 2021.
