From co-founding a fisheries consulting firm to his 26-year tenure as an environmental lead for the Portland Water Bureau, native fish have been at the center of Steve Kucas’s professional practice and personal passion.

As a fisheries scientist, Steve served as principal visionary in the design of the Habitat Conservation Plan for the Bull Run Watershed, establishing policy to protect native fish habitat for future generations. He led the acquisition of private property easements to extend habitat protections and partnered in strategic communication that facilitated dam removals and habitat restoration for the Sandy River.

Steve is skilled at developing appropriate, systematic, and detailed questions at the start of fisheries projects, addressing difficult technical issues and creating solutions. Steve also has a passion for chasing steelhead with a fly rod, and the beautiful North Umpqua is his home water.
