White Salmon River, Columbia Gorge

Native Fish Society is conducting a multi-year survey project to better tell the story of what is happening with our wild Steelhead and Coho after the removal of a dam that didn't allow fish passage. With our partners, WDFW and Friends of the White Salmon, we are gearing up for our fourth season of spawning surveys.

This is where you come in!

Are you interested in walking some beautiful creeks, looking for spawning wild fish, and collecting the data that can help revive abundant wild fish around the region? We can use the help!

There are different sections of waterways that need to be monitored. You can join us for a single spawning survey expedition (usually 3 to 4 hours long) during the week or weekend, but we prefer that you are willing to sign up for multiple surveys!

When:

Trainings will be 6 hours,  from 9am-3pm on both October 28th & 29th  (Pick the date that works for you) to go over methods and equipment and walk the tributaries we will be surveying. Training will occur along the White Salmon River - specific address sent upon signup. *If either of these training days don't work for your schedule, but you're still interested in getting involved, please contact J Michelle Swope to coordinate an alternative time that works for you!

J Michelle Swope will also be hosting two virtual Q&A Zoom meetings for anyone interested in learning more! They will be on Wednesday, October 4th, from 6pm-7pm and Friday, October 13th, from 6pm-7pm. All are welcome to join!

Please signup for either training day by October 20th, 2022, so we have an accurate count for supplies and lunch.

Spawning surveys will run through the end of June 2024. Volunteers survey the tributaries of Mill, Spring, and Buck creeks every 10 days through December, then every 14 days through the end of May.

Even if you can only make it to one survey, we would still love your help!

Additional Info:

We provide waders, boots, fuel assistance, and necessary equipment for volunteers. New volunteers are paired with seasoned volunteers to help with training.

For more information, contact Native Fish Society Washington Coordinator, J. Michelle Swope at jmichelle@nativefishsociety.org or sign up at the form below.

Please join us, as together, we can tell the story of wild fish recovery on the White Salmon!
